Intelligent Cloud – Data Engineering – Senior Data Architect (C2)

Role Overview

The Senior Data Architect leads the development of enterprise-grade intelligent data platforms, business intelligence, and analytics solutions for client organisations. The role defines and governs data architecture strategies within client projects, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, and aligned with client goals. With expertise in structured and unstructured data, the Senior Data Architect designs models, integration frameworks, and governance approaches that enable high-quality, analytics-ready data. The position also provides architectural leadership, mentors client and internal teams, and influences strategic direction for data capabilities across engagements. 

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead the detailed design and documentation of data architectures for complex client projects, ensuring alignment with business objectives, technical requirements, and governance standards under direction from the Data Solution Architect. 
  • Collaborate with project teams, data engineers, data analysts, and stakeholders to ensure solutions meet agreed specifications and organisational needs. 
  • Develop architectures covering data ingestion, transformation, storage, and analytics. 
  • Contribute to projects involving data lakes, lakehouse architectures, and medallion data models (Bronze/Silver/Gold layers) as part of modern data platform design. 
  • Oversee build and deployment activities within assigned workstreams, ensuring adherence to scope, quality benchmarks, security requirements, and compliance standards. 
  • Conduct architectural reviews, identifying improvement opportunities and ensuring alignment with established patterns and practices. 
  • Mentor junior architects and technical staff, sharing knowledge and promoting best practices in data design and implementation. 
  • Provide on-site support as required, working closely with client teams to clarify requirements and assist with delivery tasks. 
  • Gather and document solution requirements, perform gap analysis, and contribute to technical specifications and design artefacts. 
  • Support solution testing and validation, ensuring data quality, consistency, and performance standards are met. 
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and consulting skills, including communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. 
  • Carry out additional duties as may occur from time to time, as instructed and agreed by Project Leads or the Data Solution Architect. 
  • Identify and escalate project risks, ensuring they are addressed promptly and effectively. 
  • Ensure progress updates are communicated to relevant parties both formally (status reports) and informally (ad-hoc discussions, chat channels). 
  • Provide on-site support as required by the company or client.

  • Ensure timely completion of internal processes and mandatory training. 
  • Carry out additional duties as may occur from time to time as instructed and agreed by senior members. 
  • Contribute to RFP/RFQ responses by preparing technical inputs, diagrams, and estimates under direction from the Data Solution Architect. 
  • Willing to travel abroad when required 
  • Performance manage and/or mentor junior members of the team 
  • Provide on-site support as required by company or client 
  • Within your role, you have the responsibility of protecting all information that is shared with you in the course of your association with KPMG (including information provided by clients) in line with the requirements of the Information Security Policy as stated within your contractual agreement.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both verbally and in writing.

Experience and Background

  • Minimum 8 years’ relevant experience in data architecture and solution design. 
  • Expertise in designing data modelling and data platform architectures. 
  • Proven ability to work with stakeholders to align architecture with business objectives. 
  • Strong presentation and communication skills. 
  • Ability to lead architecture reviews and mentor junior architects. 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. 
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both verbally and in writing. 
  • Expertise in designing data architectures using tools and platforms such as Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft Power BI, Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, Synapse Analytics, Entra ID, and Azure Policies. 
  • Strong knowledge of data modelling, data ingestion and integration frameworks, architecture and governance principles. 
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as DAX, SQL, SparkSQL, Python, and PySpark. 
  • Experience with delivery platforms such as Azure DevOps and GitHub.
